Ending Daylight Savings Time

By far and large, Daylight Savings Time, is one tradition that has been with us for more than 100 years, as well known as DST. Let us see some of the arguments there have been leveled as for and against this tradition. One thing that you need to acknowledge is that more than one third of the American population indeed appreciates the need for DST. As such, what one may question is the essence and need for the petitions to end daylight savings time, DST. The following is a look at some of the facts behind DST.

One thing that needs to be as clear is the fact that adjusting the clock setting forward and backward will not in any way create or reduce daylight but all it achieves is to cause the time on the face of the clock at which the sun will set to be adjusted either way, forward or backward. As such when we spring forward by an hour as it is often during the spring season, we add an hour of natural daylight to the afternoon schedule. Proponents of DST have held on to the argument that this creation of the longer evenings benefits the health in the sense that it encourages many to get out of the house and as such take part in some of their choice recreational activities which to them is an effective counteraction to the effects of their sedentary lifestyles. Besides this, they as well argue that this as well boosts the economy as the longer evenings allows many to go shopping benefiting such establishments as tourism and restaurants.

This said and done, you need to know of the fact that this has one con in the fact that it is not quite leading to savings in energy which is one of the main things and considerations that was behind the whole idea of daylight savings. In fact some states have actually seen the introduction of daylight savings result in more use of energy as there is such a high dependency in the modern society in the use of computers, air conditioning units, TVs and such energy consuming gadgets irrespective of the time as such making this whole idea somewhat worthless and one to be done away with.

The other argument against the DST and for the need to end daylight savings time is the fact that the disruptions caused to the body’s natural circadian rhythm as well happen to be quite retrogressive to one’s health.
